Sustainable planning and design has evolved into a very dynamic practice as it gains popularity through necessity. Although there are many disciplines in the design and construction industry that place sustainability at the forefront, it is Landscape Architecture that continuously strives to balance environmental, social, and economic aspects of planning and design while addressing issues such as recycling, energy efficiency, building material selection, water re-use and the creation of economic opportunities for local communities. For Planning and Landscape Architecture firm EDSA, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA, sustainability and cultural stewardship have always been an integral part of their holistic planning and design process.

EDSA’ commitment to sustainable design and development is evidenced through the body of work in which they are currently engaged and their sustainability initiatives undertaken in many of the world’ landscapes and ecosystems. In the Arabian Gulf, EDSA takes a methodical approach to planning and landscape architecture that addresses specific details unique to the region. Abu Dhabi has taken a regional lead in sustainability and hopes to soon be a leading country in green building and sustainability. EDSA has combined forces with developers in the UAE on several projects that involve sustainability. Perhaps the most dynamic being a current project of great precedence in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, The Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort(AWPR). The project, which will transform the existing Al Ain Zoo, is being designed in accordance to conservation guidelines and in support of native animals and plants. The terrain of The Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort will be a new landscape paradigm for the UAE. According to Joseph J. Lalli, President and CEO at EDSA, “his project is an opportunity to cultivate natural beauty and inspiration, as we’e building an environment for wildlife and creating an exhibition of sustainability.”?

Following the principles established in the Abu Dhabi 2030 Urban Framework Plan, designed to safeguard the city’ unique character and heritage, the AWPR will become a model for culture, ecology, conservation, and education. “DSA’ approach encompasses sustainability on a larger scale, not only incorporating green building design, but also careful planning which balances environmental impacts, financial stability and social responsibilities to clients and the community at large,” Lalli continues.

EDSA의 알 아인 디자인팀은 지역적 생태, 지형, 기후에 의해 영향을 받아 형성되는 자연 경관을 극적으로 연출하는 방법론을 도입한다. 이렇게 설계된 경관은 수자원 보존과 지역 고유의 자연 유산이 유기적으로 연결되도록 조건을 만족시켜야 한다.

이 프로젝트의 클라이언트인 아부다비는 아랍에미레이트UAE의 주도국으로 지속가능성에 관해서는 아랍권에서 선두적 위치에 있으며, 그린 빌딩과 지속가능성 분야에서 세계적인 선진국으로 부상하길 원하고 있다. EDSA는 이미 여러 경로로 UAE 지역의 개발자들과 관계를 유지하고 있었고, 이미 다수의 지역 프로젝트를 통해서 지속가능성를 구현한 바 있었다. ‘알아인 와일드 라이프 파크앤리조트(이하 AWPR)’는 아마도 아부다비에서 현재 진행중인 가장 역동적인 프로젝트일 것이다. 이 프로젝트는 기존의 알 아인 동물원의 개보수를 포함하는 부지 전반의 동식물 및 자연환경을 보전하는 것을 주축으로 추가 설계지침을 마련하였다. 완공된 AWPR은 UAE의 경관의 새로운 패라다임을 열 것으로 기대된다. EDSA의 CEO인 조셉 랄리는“AWPR은 야생 환경과 지속가능성의 장을 통합함으로써 지역 고유의 자연적 아름다움과 영감을 상호 발전시키는 기회”라고 표현하고 있다.

‘아부다비 2030’은 도시의 정체성 및 문화 유산을 보전하려는 포괄적 도시계획법안으로서, AWPR 프로젝트는 이 법안을 근거로 계획·설계가 진행되었고, 문화, 생태, 보전 및 교육분야의 롤모델이 될 것으로 기대하고 있다. 조셉 랄리는 “EDSA의 접근방법은 작게는 환경친화적 빌딩 설계규약을 만족시킬 뿐만 아니라 크게는 부지 전반의 지속가능성 구현을 포괄해야 하는 것이었다”고 설명한다. 이러한 과정은 개발 후 환경영향평가와 프로젝트 개발비 사이의 균형 및 조율을 필요로 한다.
