Pirrama Park
공식적으로 Former Water Police Site로 알려진 Pirrama 공원은 과거 Pyrmont peninsula의 산업지대 중 일부인 1.8ha에 새로 조성된 공원이다. 시드니 해안선 상의 요지에 자리하고 있어 인근 지역 주민들은 물론 보다 광범위한 커뮤니티에게 기억될 만한 공원이자 독특한 기회를 제공하고 있다.
마스터플랜은 기존의 Pyrmont Point와 Gibba Parks를 확장시키는 새로운 공원으로 구상되었다. 또한 Pyrmont peninsula에 있는 4 헥타르 이상의 공공 오픈 스페이스와 더불어 접근성이 뛰어난 공공공지 및 기존 공원들과도 연결되도록 했다.
Pyrmont 해안을 따라 다양하고 복합적인 새로운 동선과 해변 산책로를 제공하고 있으며, Glebe부터 Rushcutters Bay까지 이어진 14km 정도의 보행로, 자전거도로 및 오픈 스페이스 네트워크 상의 주요 연결점이 되고 있다.
공원의 구조는 대규모에서 개인적 규모에 이르기까지 다양한 목적을 수용할 수 있는 공간으로 디자인되었다. 부지 내의 지표 레벨의 변화는 각양각색의 이용객들의 다양한 이용행태를 수용하고 여러가지 특성의 공간들을 제공한다.
이를 위해 공원은 크게 위요된 작은 만(sheltered Bay), 기둥 정원(pole Garden), 해변 산책로, 녹색과 포인트, 작은 숲(grove), 커뮤니티 광장, 절벽(escarpment), Pirrama Road 등 7개의 주요 공간으로 구성되었다.
위요된 작은 만은 해안가에서 소극적인 여가활동의 기회가 되기도 하고 시드니항구와의 역사성을 강화해주는 역할을 하기도 한다. 프리캐스트 콘크리트로 제작된 계단과 플랫폼은 다양한 레벨로 디자인되어 해수면 높이의 변화에 따른 레벨 변화의 경험을 선사한다. 물가에는 걸을 수 있는 넓은 선체와 같은 곳이 있으며, 조수 간만의 차로 인한 수위변화에 따라 부분적으로 잠기기도 하고 드러나기도 한다. 또한 과거 부두 플랫폼들의 흔적들은 이곳만의 역사성을 회상하게 한다.
그밖에 공원 동쪽과 북쪽에는 놀이를 위한 개방된 잔디밭과 Port Jackson Figs(무화과나무의 일종으로 호주 동부의 자생수목) 아래 그늘이 조성되어 있다. 주요 해변로 동쪽 부분까지 군식된 유칼립투스(Gum Tree: 호주에서 가장 흔히 볼 수 있는 나무로 300여 종이 넘는다) 나무들은 피크닉과 바비큐 시설들과 함께 이 공원을 좀 더 친밀한 공원으로 만들어주고 있다. 남쪽의 어린이 놀이터는 커뮤니티 광장과 인접해 있다. 커뮤니티 광장은 Pirrama Road의 커브 길을 따라 있는 사암 절벽으로 구분되고 화장실과 카페 등의 시설이 있는 파빌리온을 포함하고 있다.
The brief for the Pirrama Park (formally known as the Former Water Police Site) was to develop a new public park for a 1.8 hectare parcel of post industrial land on the Pyrmont peninsula. The prime location of the site on Sydney’ waterfront offered the unique opportunity for the creation of memorable public parkland for both local users and the wider community. The brief also required appropriately scaled community facilities including shade canopies, kiosk and toilets to be included within the design.
The master plan conceived of the new park lands as an enlargement of the existing Pyrmont Point and Gibba Parks, and connected with the existing public parks and publicly accessible spaces on the Pyrmont peninsula providing a combined public open space of over 4ha.
The design provides multiple new paths and a waterfront promenade around the Pyrmont foreshore, an important link in the 14km network of pedestrian paths, cycleways and open space extending from Glebe to Rushcutters Bay.
The park structure is designed to incorporate multiple spaces, from the broad scale to the intimate. Level changes across the site are used in subtle ways to create discreet areas that allow for different uses and create varying park rooms. The structure has defined these park spaces into 7 key areas; the sheltered bay, the pole garden, the shoreline promenade, the green and the point, the grove, the community square and the escarpment and Pirrama Rd.
The sheltered bay creates passive recreation opportunities at the waters edge and strengthens the site’ historic relationship to Sydney harbour. Considerable marine engineering has been undertaken including excavation to create the harbour inlet. The design incorporates precast concrete steps and platforms at varying levels to heighten the experience of tidal water movement. Foreshore elements include outboard walks, maritime remnants and platforms sunken and revealed by monthly and annual tidal cycles. Existing timber piles are retained where possible as remnant artefacts of the sites historic uses.
Open lawn areas for informal play and clusters of shaded areas under Port Jackson Figs are located at the northern and eastern sections of park. To the east of the main promenade denser plantings of native Gum trees define a more intimate series of park spaces with facilities for picnicking and barbeques. To the south, a children’ play area is located adjacent to the community square. The community square is defined by the sandstone cliff on the curve of Pirrima Road, and incorporates a pavilion including cafe and toilet facilities. This sunny, sheltered place can accommodate a range of public uses including cultural events and performances, meetings, markets and festivals.
A number of community facilities are provided for in the park. These facilities include shade structures, a kiosk, new toilets at the southern edge of the park, barbecue facilities and a new public staircase connecting Herbert Street to Pirrama Road. The children’ play area is located adjacent to the kiosk and toilet, enhancing visual surveillance. Three shade pavilions provide shelter in the park whilst the tree population is established. The larger canopy is located in the playground, with two additional shade structures on the northern end of the existing concrete wharf and on the northern edge of the children’ playground.
The project restores an alienated post industrial water frontage to publicly accessible parklands. The transformation of the former water police site to a park with its range of rooms and experiences has not only benefited the surrounding community, but it has added a missing link toward the completion of the 14km publicly accessible harbour walk between Rozelle and Woolloomooloo. This is a major contribution to the greater landscape of Sydney.
